Three year old Star Witness gelding Brilliant Concept was able to get his maiden win on the board at Ballarat on the synthetic in a head bobbing photo finish. With the luck going his way stablemate and race favourite Denatin was delegated to second place with the 0.1 length margin.
Given a great front running ride by jockey Damien Thornton, he jumped well from barrier 5 and was able to cross the field and take up the lead on the rail. Setting a moderate tempo in the first half of the 1500m event he was challenged in the straight but kicked on strongly to hold on for a tough win.
